I strongly believe that classroom environment plays a role in students learning and performance. Classroom environment is not only the aesthetics of a classroom but also the psychological classroom atmosphere. Students should feel comfortable in their classrooms, and they should feel free to participate knowing that sometimes they will make mistakes. I believe teachers should motivate their students to be themselves and share their thoughts and opinions at the appropriate times. Through reinforcement, teachers can encourage students to participate in activities and develop a positive self-esteem. In addition, teachers should never embarrass their students in front of their peers. Teachers can use humor, compassion and fairness to allow students to feel comfortable with them.
The classroom itself should also be welcoming and motivating for students to learn. As schools are like a second home to students, they should feel a sense of belonging in the classroom. Teachers can do this by showcasing students’ work in the classroom, which also gives them a sense of pride and self esteem. Placing desks in groups allows students to collaborate with one another and stimulates discussion. However, it is important to have areas of free and quiet space to allow students to work independently. Teachers should be aware of where they place their students. Students who cause trouble and are easily distracted should be placed at opposite ends of the classroom, and to the front of the class.
